Message you increase the cross sectional area of the chokepoint by two in an effort to increase volumetric flow rate. the engine or turbos do not have to work as hard to pull air through the restrictive filters. its similar to having one big filter with increased surface area on the filter element.

an airflow converter (read safc neo, etc) is used to increase the measuring abillity of the stock maf essentially. there are different methods of doing this. in the case of the dummy maf setup for a dual maf setup, you double the airflow of one maf. or you can run wiring from both mafs to the corresponding secondary maf wires from the safc and combine/average the two readings. in other setups, you essentially increase fuel consumption in proportion to different rpm intervals, aka distinct airflow requirements aka volumetric flow rates or mass flow rates. this balances the air/fuel system if the ecu was not reading the airflow correctly.

there is more than one way of designing a system!
